As an artist, Gittins is essentially self-taught. He began sketching and painting in the late 1980s; initially painting with watercolors and now exclusively working with acrylics.

Primarily a landscape artist, Gittins has been honored with juried Best of Show, Best Use of Medium and numerous 1st Place awards. His works hang regionally, nationally and internationally.

He has been influenced by the early Impressionists and the early California landscapes of Edgar Payne, William Wendt and Maurice Braun.

Contemporary artists Kathleen Elsey, Craig Nelson and Gerald Stinski have provided personal encouragement and professional support in the development of his painting style.

Gittins lives in Sonoma County, California.
